In what was easily the upset of the day, Lowell beat Thurston 18-12 at the McKenzie Passing League on Tuesday.
Led by the potent combo of quarterback Boone Casarez and running back Zac Cardwell, the Red Devils stepped away from their usual power running game and tossed the pigskin all over the field, piling up yards and points in the process.
Casarez had three touchdowns, all to Cardwell, and said his team relished the role of underdog going into the game.
"It was pretty cool," Casarez said. "We're 1A so we have nothing to lose. They kind of have to protect everything. We manned up and played our game. I wish we could throw the ball like that every game, but it's tough to do in eight-man football."
Though Lowell plays eight men during the regular season, they used many spread formations against Colts. Under new head coach Tim Pinson, the Red Devils may end up throwing the ball more than most 1A schools.
